Blog update from first 4 days,

Day One of the trip to Hungary, AKA aaallllllll day including a nine hour bus trip with delirious children confusing the local scenery with an African safari which entailed hippos, giraffes, lions and the majestic and deadly cheetah. The men of the wild safari jeep were stone cold foxes, and were tall, handsome, and muscular. Conversations included: Edward Cullen’s sophisticated lady-friend, Tyrell’s deep love for fried chicken, and fancy words. After the long travel time our teams ended up safe and sound in the city of Veszprem. Before the great travelers could rest their weary heads for the night they first had to climb Mount Everest (of stairs).Unfortunately some did not make it and perished. Day Two- The wonderful beings known in modern society as the girls watched the hairy ape like men practice their stupid insignificant drills while making the gym smell like dirty cheese and sweat like a prisoner on death row. The wonderful beings then proceeded to practice their majestic and graceful movements on the court followed by a charming lunch but not as charming as it could have been, why you ask? The foul smelling beasts raided the lovely little grocery store that had all the good food and fruit and took it for their own selfish delight. We then ventured in to the gym once more to frolic amongst the balls and nets. The boys still smell (but continue to be stone cold foxes). Day three – The boys took showers and after their foul stench was cleansed no women of Veszprem or the world could resist their charms. Rather than accept the large amount of female attention given to them they decided to give the attention to the scrimmage between the U-16 Alberta Girls and the Polish U-16 Girls. The outcome ended in a hard fought draw. The men proceeded to practice their handball skills and explore the city of Veszprem in search of stick’em and beautiful Hungarian ladies. They succeeded in finding the stick’em. The women shopped for clothes, nail polish, and shoes. After the boys and girls finished their shopping adventures, they had their first school dinner and after got ready for their first handball games the next day. Day Four – The girls had a very short sleep interrupted by snoring, nose blowing and heavy breathing. When they woke though they all felt much better and proceeded to go to breakfast where they had bologna and bread stuff. They then caught an early bus and arrived at the handball stadium where they played their first game against the home team. With a slow start the first half wasn’t their best, but they picked up the intensity in the second half. Unfortunately they still lost. The U 16 girls took the very early bus with the Belgium girls and spoke fondly of chocolate and waffles and inturductions ( Je m’appelle bibliotheque) thanks to the smooth talking frenchish goalie. In the stadium we ended up lending the Belgium girls a pair of shoes for their forgetful feet. The game was played against the iclandic monsters and involved a many amount of blood sweat and tears. And turnovers. The final score reflecting accordingly. 13-21. OH SNAP. What we lost in the score we made up with in shopping at the Hummel kiosk. DOUBLE OH SNAP. The U-16 boys woke up nice and early with a 6 am start for a 10-19 game. Discovering the true beauty of stick’em in their first game it was safe to say they had a rude awakening. The boys fought hard against a truly skilled, very gigantic Hungarian team taking a 32-19 loss walking away like champs anyways. The effort was strong and many improvements were made from quite the shock moving from Alberta handball, to international handball. We all walked away with a smile on our face, and looking forward to the rest of the tournament. The U-18 Boys had the latest game and after a leisurely morning they took the hour bus ride out of town for their game against Saint Petersburg, Russia. Despite a good offensive game the teams defence was found lacking against the larger, more experienced Russians. For many of the players it was their first international handball game and took the loss hard, but after a well needed shower everybody was back to normal. The teams arrived at the opening ceremonies in the late afternoon and proceeded to mingle with the other teams waiting for the ceremonies to begin. Pictures will be arriving on Facebook soon of many happy Europeans excited to meet there Canadian opponents and potential friends. Soon the rush of many excited athletes pushed into the Veszprem Stadium Arena to attend the 16th annual opening ceremonies of the Cell Cup. The teams were introduced one by one, moving into speeches and other information from tournament officials. They came to Hungarian acts of dance and skip-rope, both being extremely talented and easy on the eyes. After the tournament was officially opened the ceremonies concluded with a departing light show. The teams then returned to the hotel to get ready for the coming days of more handball.
